I truly enjoyed this novel because it delivers an excellent read on so many levels. It's full of wit, humor and adventure, and it's also skillfully interwoven with social commentary. I'm amazed at the keen eye the author has on the world around us and how he conveys it so artistically. You feel what the characters feel as you travel gleefully along with Francis and Easter on their quest. I have to admit that I would have liked to have been able to smack Francis upside the head a couple of times, which only goes to show how much he seemed to come off the pages. The author has definitely humanized his characters which is what makes a great story.It's a wonderful book and a definite keeper in my library.

"Pangamonium" reminds me of the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby "Road-to" movies. Those were fun little jaunts, heavy on the slapstick, with a fair amount of charm. There was always a plot of sorts, but the plot was little more than scenery, a backdrop, something to keep us distracted between the gags. And there were characters, but always of a type. The good guys were pretty good, but not above a little benign mischief if it got them out of a jam. And the bad guys were really bad, so there was never any doubt as to who was who. Everything's amiable and aimless, fairly fun and funny; you can take it or leave it, and you won't miss it if you leave it, but you'll enjoy it if you take it.
Zanesh Catkin's like-minded work revolves around Frances Germaine, a traveler who ends up in Panga, a fictitious country which seems to be somewhere in Central Asia. He ends up accompanying a man named Easter as they search for Easter's grandfather's buried treasure, about which they only have a single dying last word as a clue Dubesur. Along the way, they run afoul of the military, which is apparently facilitating the exploitation of orphan children to help Westerners manufacture sex toys cheaply in sweat shops. I'm a little vague about the details beyond that, and it's entirely possible that I got some of them wrong; Catkin stretches it all out a bit so it ends up a little thinner and less memorable than it should have been.
And that's a shame, because Catkin's obviously a talented writer, and there's plenty to enjoy here. Describing his traveling companion, for instance, Catkin-as-Germaine notes that Easter carried a Bible to smuggle things. "The book was hollowed out to hold a pistol, diamonds, drugs, money or any other item not normally found there," Catkin writes. "He had already read it and had more need of the cover than the contents." And later on, while trying to give blood, Germaine muses that perhaps his blood would be "of an unknown, useless type--not B Negative or O Positive but Qwerty--of use only when operating on journos. Instructions Distil before use." While the plot's nothing to write home about (or leave home for), there are other reasons to take this trip besides the treasure at the end; Catkin's a funny guy who loves a clever turn of phrase, and if that's what you're looking for in a travelling companion, it's worth tagging along.
Pangamonium is very readable. Great to see a local author in print. references to South Australia were enjoyable. In fact the little references to various other sources throughout was entertaining. the most obvious was the dying words of the grandfather Dubesor or Dubesur (rosebud or rusebud) haha. Those sort of play on words litter the text and provide amusement. The heart of the book is a movement from cynicism to caring. specifcally symbolised as the western world's movement from obsession with wealth and pleasure at the expense of a suffering third world, to a point of relationship and involvement in liberation. However getting to that point was a wacky ride. Sometimes I felt like it was a little too obviously trying to be clever, but others may find that aspect part of its charm. I don't think its destined to be a classic, but I would certainly look to future works by this author.
Now here is a new-style novel for the 21st century! Our times seem to hunger for the real. Ironically, in this high farce, "Pangamonium", Zanesh Catkin gets us there via his imaginative journey to a flawed contemporary Shangri-La. Catkin takes the old tools of making art to play with we readers as he moves between a romping good tale with vexed, larger-than-life characters and inventive asides about his own premise in the writing. Multi-layered, it is no arid post-modern novel, but has a quality of irony and wit as he toys and tantalises us with the potential of playfulness, or the ludic mode.
In our digitally mediated times where the notion of privacy is ancient history, what better way to start this novel than Francis Germaine, the hard-bitten journo, enduring a customs search of his suitcase to reveal it bursting with sex toys? And they aren't even his! An ultimately shameful experience for most of us, but Catkin piles it on by having his hero meet up with Easter, a Bible carrying African on a mission who highjacks him pretending to be his lover. And the pace just cranks up from this start.
What better respite from the contemporary condition? How long since you've read a book that gives you belly laughs? Health alert "Laughter is the best medicine". If the novel is a bridge to existential questions, there is plenty of grist for the mill here.
What books is this like? Hard to say, perhaps a mutant hybrid of Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" and Tom Sharpe's "Wilt". For the multiple constituencies of readers, there is definitely something for everyone here! What's next, Zanesh?
